Mariëlle Coenen is founder of Corporate Heroes.
I built my career in a corporate environment, achieving success through my masculine qualities: being results-driven, ambitious, hardworking, and aiming to reach the boardroom as quickly as possible. The birth of my first daughter marked a shift -my more feminine qualities awakened: intuition, connection, and the ability to slow down. At that time, I had just stepped into my first leadership position, managing a new department. I returned from maternity leave as a leader. With a focus on people - and success followed naturally, without the hard work.
As a corporate management trainee at Rabobank 20 years ago, I was introduced to personal development through skills training and by actively seeking assignments outside my comfort zone - such as being the first trainee to go abroad, joining the M&A team in London, despite feeling insecure about my English and coming from a no-nonsense retail background. I witnessed my own growth, and it left me wanting more.
